John sees his journalism closely aligned to advocacy, think tanks and academia.

Since 2019 he has been Senior Associate Fellow at the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI), the UK’s security and defence research centre.

In July 2020 he published a paper about Russian and Chinese interference in Germany, part of a larger RUSI project on Europe. You can read it here.

In 2021, he produced a three-part series of long reads and events for Chatham House looking the systemic rivalry between the US, China and Russia and how it affects crisis management.

Over the years he has chaired or taken part in many public and closed events for academic and research institutions.

Among his previous roles, he was Chair of the Clore Social Leadership programme, which trains existing and future leaders in the charity sector. He was a Member of Council at King’s College, London, for four years.

He was on external adviser on freedom of expression to Google from 2012-14, advising on a variety of difficult issues around speech on the internet and chairing events for them on related issues around the world.

His passion for free speech began when he was asked to run Index on Censorship, a long-established organisation that champions the issue around the world. During that time, Index led a multi-agency campaign that successfully amended the UK libel law.
